I read elsewhere that this is possible with a simple cable. Anyone know what this cable is called and do i need a special "out" plug from my computer to enable it to work? |

Depends. Do you want to line out to play pc music thru the stereo, or line from the stereo to the pc like if you want to do some vinyl rips to mp3? |

Go to Dick Smith, get a 3.5mm (male) to RCA (male) adaptor cable. You plug the 3.5mm cable into the speaker port of your computer, the RCA plugs into the back of your amp, and away you go. Make sure you get a long enough cable. Otherwise, just get a block adaptor (if they sell them) and connect the two devices in the middle. |

cheers. presumably 3.5mm is the standard size for headphones and what not, because that is the size I have coming OUT of my computer - I have an adapter for my stereo. The RCA thing, im not sure about, but ill be able to tell if its the wrong thing at dick smith's or tandy or wherever i end up.
does anyone else actually do this? i.e. link their pc and stereo?? its a good idea, because my speakers are shit quality and my stereo is top notch (yamaha amp, kef speakers, and a pioneer cd player, fyi) |

Most amps should have RCA inputs, since it's still the Audio-Visual standard. Though "optical" or something is meant to be the future of audio.
I used to have my PC speakers and my stereo hooked up to my computer, which provided me with pretty fuckin' great sound. My stereo doesn't have the best low end, but it's got a very crisp, clear sound, while my PC speakers have too much bass, so it evened out really well, and gave a full wall of sound. Was pretty great when I turned it up. I don't have it set up like that anymore since we moved, and my stereo is on the opposite side of my room now, since it wouldn't fit anywhere else. |

you could also use A/V cables to connect from your Stereo to your sound card |

I'm in the middle of making my next fun project!
I am making a juke box that runs off usb drives etc. Pretty much designed for parties.
I've bought a shitty 1.7ghz dell, running linux. Coded a program that when you you plug your usb drive into it, my program will run all the files into a playlist. It is then connected to an old beasty Marantz amp which is then plugged into two tower speakers and a sub (I bought the whole 5.1 setup, though as I'm using stereo sound/amp I will not need the centre or rears)
I'm making it so I can watch movies on the monitor that I'll have installed into the box and listen to music (for party environment).
So yeah I used a 3.5mm to RC connector that I bought for 8 bucks to connect the comp to the amp. And it would also be recommended that you have a good sound card as crappy sound cards give out poor quality music. |
